The name Spruce is believed to originate from Polish 'z Prus' meaning 'from Prussia' – Polish merchants sourced most spruce wood from Prussia.

"Old Tjikko" is a spruce tree root system in Darlana, Sweden that has been sprouting new trees for nearly 10,000 years. Scientists think that the tree originally took root around the year 7542 BC. (Ripley's Believe It or Not 2010, p. 33)
