Identifying Trees

Identifying trees is a great way to learn more about the natural world around you. By looking closely at features such as leaves, bark, seeds, and overall shape, you can begin to recognise different tree species.

You can also identify trees for the benefit of others, allowing people to learn about the trees around them, such as a project in your local park or other community space. Understanding how to find out the species of a tree is a great skill that helps you to better appreciate the trees that you see every day.

Smartphone App

Many apps are available for smartphones to identify trees. We recommend Seek by iNaturalist, which we have used in several applications and have been impressed with its accuracy. Always check photos for comparison, and ideally use alongside an established book or website, for the most accurate identification.
