Stand back and ask yourself:
Is it tall and narrow?
Wide with a rounded crown?
Cone-shaped?
Does it have drooping branches?
Many trees have a characteristic silhouette. For example:
Oaks often have broad, spreading crowns.
Birches are light and airy.
Pines are usually more conical.
Willows have hanging branches.
What shape are they?
Rounded lobes?
Pointed lobes?
Heart-shaped?
Oval?
Needle-like?
Are they:
Simple (one leaf)?
Compound (made of many leaflets)?
What do the edges look like?
Smooth
Serrated (like a bread knife)
Deeply lobed
